"Nyumba Rafiki Kwa Rafiki Zetu", translating to "A Friendly Home for Our Friends," is an initiative dedicated to creating accessible, safe, and welcoming housing solutions for individuals with disabilities. This project aims to design and renovate living spaces that eliminate physical barriers, enhance comfort, and foster independence for our friends with mobility, sensory, and cognitive disabilities. By providing these inclusive environments, we're helping people with disabilities lead dignified, empowered lives within their communities. The project also includes workshops on accessible home design and advocates for wider adoption of disability-friendly housing practices across the country.
The *Prosthetics Provision to Amputees* project seeks to restore mobility, independence, and confidence to individuals who have undergone limb amputation. In collaboration with expert prosthetic manufacturers and healthcare providers, iRSO offers custom prosthetic devices, fittings, and follow-up support to ensure each prosthetic meets the needs of the user. This initiative not only addresses physical needs but also incorporates psychological and community support, helping amputees regain their livelihoods and reintegrate into society. Through this project, we strive to give amputees the tools they need to embrace life fully and live with resilience.
Regular physical activity is essential for preventing non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and respiratory disorders. The *Adaptive Sports/Exercises for People with Disabilities* program promotes accessible physical activity to help reduce the risk of NCDs within the disabled community. This program includes adaptive sports training, inclusive fitness sessions, and workshops on healthy lifestyles specifically tailored to people with disabilities. By making exercise engaging, enjoyable, and suited to individual capabilities, this initiative encourages long-term health benefits and enhances overall well-being within our community.
The *Basketball Team for People with Mobility Disabilities* project is a pioneering sports initiative that offers individuals with mobility impairments the chance to participate in competitive, adaptive basketball. This team serves as more than just a sports team—it's a source of community, self-expression, and empowerment. Players gain physical fitness, camaraderie, and the opportunity to represent their abilities on a larger stage. Through this team, iRSO promotes inclusivity in sports, increases awareness of adaptive athletics, and fosters a supportive environment where athletes can thrive and inspire others by showcasing their strength and resilience.
In honor of Disability Day 2024, iRSO is organizing a day-long event celebrating the achievements, resilience, and unique perspectives of people with disabilities. This year's theme, "Embracing Diversity and Accessibility for All," highlights the importance of an inclusive society. The event will feature workshops, inspiring talks, panel discussions, and performances by artists with disabilities, showcasing their talents and contributions. Additionally, iRSO will host an information fair where attendees can learn about various services, assistive technologies, and support networks. This day is an opportunity for the community to come together, raise awareness, and advocate for a world where everyone can participate fully, regardless of their abilities.
